Why it exists

Since the day Auditiono launched, an author posting a listing has been able to say what voice type they are casting for. Narrators had no way to answer, and the narrator directory could not be filtered on it. Half a feature had been live for months. This is the other half.

What it asks, and what it does not

It is a casting descriptor, not a statement about your identity. The question is how your voice lands on a listener who cannot see you.

There are three boxes:

• Female / femme-presenting
• Male / masc-presenting
• Nonbinary / androgynous

Tick as many as apply. Plenty of narrators legitimately work across the range, and a single pick would make them under-sell.

Identity has its own separate field. Heritage is there for own-voices casting, it is entirely optional, and it carries a "prefer not to say" option. The two fields are not connected and neither implies the other.

It is optional, and blank costs you nothing

Leaving it blank keeps you in every search result. It does not push you down a list or hold you back from anything.

On the narrator directory the filter arrives with every box already ticked, and it contributes nothing to the search until a visitor deliberately unticks one. Somebody has to go looking for a narrower result before it does anything at all.

Whatever you tick appears on your public profile, beside your accents and voice ages. Leave it blank and the heading is absent altogether, rather than showing as empty.

We filled it in for most of the directory, and it is marked as a guess

A filter that returns nobody on its first day is worse than no filter, so we did not ship it empty. Two things happened in August 2026, and we would rather say so plainly than let you find out.

Where you had given pronouns on your profile, we set the field from them. Those pronouns were already public and already displayed next to your name on the same page, so nothing new about you was revealed. Where the pronouns included "they", we left it blank, because there was no defensible guess to make.

For a further sixty profiles, Hannibal read the name, tagline and bio and made the call himself, leaving blank anything he was not confident about. Eight of those were left blank on purpose.

Every value we set is recorded as our guess, not your answer. Open your profile editor and you will see a notice saying so, worded differently depending on which kind of guess it was. Saving the page replaces it with your answer, including when you simply leave what we put there and save. That counts as confirming it.
