How Auditiono works
Auditiono is an audiobook casting platform. Narrators audition for books. Authors and publishers review the auditions and cast. Once a match is made, we hand off the contact details, then get out of the way.
Below is what the platform actually does on each side — not the future-roadmap version, the live one. If something below doesn't align with what you see when you sign up, the live site is correct and this page is out of date. Email hello@auditiono.com and we'll fix it.
For narrators
-
Create an account and verify your email.
Free signup. We send a confirmation email; click the link and you're in. We never sell your information and we don't run third-party analytics.
-
Build a narrator profile.
Your profile is what authors see when they're casting. Add a tagline, a short bio, a headshot, your native accent, proficient accents, languages, voice age ranges, genres you work in, technical setup, and any union affiliations. You also list audiobook credits with verification URLs (links to the books on Audible, Apple Books, Libro.fm, publisher pages, or anywhere else they can be checked); we attempt to capture cover thumbnails automatically, with manual upload available as a fallback. At least three credits with verifiable URLs are required for verification.
-
Upload audio samples.
Samples are short MP3s that demonstrate range — characters, accents, genres, whatever makes your work uniquely yours. You need at least one to submit for verification. Most verified narrators have three to six.
-
Submit for verification.
Verification is a human review. An admin checks that the profile is real, the samples sound like genuine narration work, and the listed credits exist as claimed. We aim to respond within one to three business days. Once verified, your profile becomes publicly visible at
auditiono.com/narrator/your-slugand you can audition for listings. -
Browse open listings, or wait for invitations.
The listings page shows all open casting calls. Filter by genre, deal type, exclusivity, project deadline shape, and special tags (multi-cast, dual narration, explicit content). Authors can also directly invite you by name to audition; those invitations land in your inbox.
-
Audition.
Read the audition script the author provided, record your take, and submit an MP3 with a brief cover note and a rate quote. The specs: MP3 only, up to 25 MB per audition (roughly 17 minutes at 192 kbps — generous for a sample take). Record in your DAW (Audacity, Reaper, Pro Tools, anything that exports MP3) and upload the finished file; there's no in-browser recording. Authors see exactly what you sent (audio, note, quote, delivery date) on a single page.
-
Wait for a response.
Authors can shortlist your audition (they're seriously considering you), pass (they're moving on), or cast (you've got the job). We notify you by email at each step. You can also see live status in your audition inbox at any time.
-
If you're cast, take the deal off-platform.
When the author casts you, we email a handoff packet to both of you containing each other's contact details and a note on where to distribute the finished audiobook. The actual contract, payment, and production happen between you and the author. We don't sit in the middle and we don't take a cut.
For authors and publishers
-
Create an account and verify your email.
Free signup. We send a confirmation email; click and you're in.
-
Build an author profile.
Display name, a short bio, and a verification URL (KDP author page, IngramSpark distributor page, publisher website, author website, Goodreads profile, or any platform-agnostic page that confirms you own the rights to what you're casting). Publishers and imprints can post on behalf of multiple book authors using the same profile.
-
Post a listing.
A listing is one casting call for one book. You'll describe the book (title, genre, word count, completion timeline), the deal structure (PFH, Royalty Share, Hybrid, or a custom arrangement), exclusivity (whether the audiobook will be available everywhere or on a single platform), and any special requirements (gender preferences, character notes, content warnings, multi-cast tagging). You'll also paste an audition script, usually 500-800 words of representative material.
Want to keep it private? Tick Unlisted under Visibility and the listing stays off the public browse page, the sitemap, and saved-search alerts, reachable only by the direct link you share. It's handy for approaching specific narrators, or keeping a project quiet until you're ready. You can make it public any time.
-
Admin review.
Listings go through a short admin pass before going public, to filter out spam and obvious scope problems (unrealistic terms, missing rights verification, etc.). We aim to respond within one to three business days. Approved listings publish at
auditiono.com/listing/book-slugand become visible via the public browse. -
Receive auditions, or invite specific narrators.
Verified narrators discover your listing through the public browse, through filters they have set up, or directly via your listing URL if you share it with your target audiences via social media or other platforms. You can also browse narrators and invite specific people, whose voices fit the book, to audition.
-
Review on a single page.
Each audition shows the narrator's name and headshot, the audio file, the cover note they sent, their rate quote, and their estimated delivery date. Shortlist your favourites with one click, pass on others with a brief note (optional), and keep reviewing until you've found the right voice.
Casting with someone else? Use Share these auditions to send a co-author, publisher, or agent a private, read-only link (no account needed on their end). They get a listen-only page of the narrator names, roles, and audio, with no rate details and no way to change your casting. Share all auditions or just your shortlist, scope it to one role if you like, and revoke it whenever you want.
-
Cast a narrator.
When you click Select this narrator on a shortlisted audition, the handler writes a match record, fires a handoff packet email to both of you, and (for single-cast listings) closes the listing while declining the other auditions with a courteous note. Multi-cast listings stay open so you can cast additional roles.
-
Take the deal off-platform.
The handoff packet contains the narrator's contact email, a note on where to distribute the finished audiobook, and a couple of optional resources: Royaltally for tracking royalties on a royalty-share deal, and our audiobook contract templates. From there, you and the narrator handle the contract, payment, and production directly. We don't sit in the middle and we don't take a cut.
What happens after a match
The handoff is the moment Auditiono steps out. Both you and the other party receive an email with each other's contact details, an explanation of how distribution works for the deal type, and any other resources that might help you get from "we've matched" to "the audiobook is on sale" without re-inventing the wheel.
We don't relay messages. We don't sit on top of payments. We don't escrow money or collect commissions. The deal you negotiate is yours.
If something goes wrong — the deal falls through, the other side stops responding, you change your mind — email hello@auditiono.com and we'll help where we can. For now, undoing a selection is a manual operation on our end; we're holding off on building a self-serve undo path until there's enough volume to make it worth building.
What Auditiono is not
Auditiono is a casting platform. It is not:
- A contract drafter. We point at audiobook contract templates in the handoff packet; you draft your own.
- A payment processor. We never see your money. Deals are paid directly between authors and narrators.
- A production service. Narrators record their own audio on their own equipment in their own studios.
- A distribution platform. You upload the finished audiobook to your platform of choice: ACX, Author's Republic, Voices by INaudio, Findaway Voices, direct uploads to retailers, etc. The handoff packet contains pointers for whichever deal shape you're working with.
- A subscription product. There's no monthly fee, no per-listing fee, no per-audition fee, no commission. Royal Wave Media's revenue comes from its other products (notably Royaltally, our royalty-tracking software), not from taking a slice of your deal.
